first_imgA man who went berserk in a hotel and threatened another man with a hurley stick claimed his drink was spiked.Letterkenny Court.Paul Hughes, 42, appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with possession of an article with intent to cause injury. But Hughes, who has no previous convictions, claimed he had no memory of the attack.The incident happened at the Downings Bay Hotel on August 9th last.The court heard that Hughes owns a mobile home close to the hotel and had been staying in the area and visiting the hotel for the past ten years.The hotel even gave Hughes a reference saying what an upstanding person he was and how he had never caused any trouble previously.He was also charged with being intoxicated and using threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour in a public place.Solicitor for the accused, Ms Fiona Browne, told the court that her client felt his drink was spiked.“He has no other explanation but thinks his drink was spiked because he has no memory of what happened and did not even know the man he had attacked,” she said.Hughes, from Blackbog Road, Greencastle, Co Tyrone, told the court “I don’t remember anything about it. I went to the man the next day and apologised.
