Ecuadorean Navy Confiscates 773 Kg of Marijuana and Arrests Two Colombians

first_img The Ecuadorean Marines seized 773 kg of marijuana on July 5, in an operation on the Colombian border in which two Colombians were arrested, the National Directorate of Aquatic Spaces (Dirnea) announced. The seizure took place on a beach in the locality of Rocafuerte, around 175 km northwest of Quito, in the border province of Esmeraldas, AFP was told by a source at the Navy’s North Operations Command, which previously reported the seizure of 430 kg of drugs. Two Colombians, one of them undocumented, were arrested in the operation, which included the participation of a member of the Coast Guard who detected the boat that was transporting the contraband. “The Ecuadorean Navy, in its fight against drug trafficking, has landed another heavy blow, for which reason it will continue conducting patrols and working in coordination with all Naval units and competent authorities to combat illicit activities in the country,” Dirnea said in a statement. During the first six months of 2012, Ecuador seized around 17 tons of drugs, chiefly cocaine. Seizures of narcotics reached 26 tons in 2011, compared to 18 tons in 2010 and the record of 68 tons in 2009. On the basis of those figures, President Rafael Correa stated a week ago that his country is one of the world’s most effective in the fight against drug trafficking and the only one in the Andean region where coca, the raw material for cocaine, is not grown.
